vinnie in the community

vinnie gets involved in the community and makes a difference. he has done it all of his career and not by just a quick mention of an event or cause. from leading the fans in their successful fight to keep baseball and football in seattle when both were headed out of town to getting his head shaved by the Mariners Jay Buhner to support Cystic Fibrosis raising thousands of dollars or serving up spaghetti on a pittsburgh street corner to benefit the little sisters of the poor, vinnie rolls up his sleeves and joins the community to get the job done.

after the leading the fans in a stunning movement to build a ballpark to keep the mariners in seattle, vinnie once again threw himself in the political forum as the seahawks threatened to move to los angeles. vinnie helped lead fan movements that resulted in paul allen buying the team and contributing to the construction of a state of the art football stadium. vinnie was one of the fans named on a plaque mounted in the entrance of Century Link Field in 2010.

vinnie added a bit of a kick to the mariners annual 'buhner buzz cut night' when he solicited 'sportstalk with new york vinnie' listeners to contribute money to get jay buhner to shave vinnie's head. the goal of raising $20,000 was far exceeded that night and the most famous bald head in seattle sports history sheared vinnie's locks outside the home plate entrance to safeco field raising $28,000 for the cystic fibrosis foundation.
one of vinnie's proudest projects was the 'fix-a-field' program that he founded while at kjr-am. working with the city of seattle parks department, baseball and athletic fields that were in need of repair were identified. volunteer listeners and local celebrities would get together on a saturday morning and spend all day working side by side making needed repairs to a field. when the day was done the field was ready to be used to play ball again. it was a way for listeners to feel a sense of belonging to the station and to each other and do some much needed restoration to some baseball fields that were suffering from a budget crunch.
